How to Plant Strawberry Seeds:

  • Choose the Seeds

First of all, we have to determine the variety of strawberry that we want to grow. There are two basic types of strawberries that we need to know before starting gardening.

The summer producing strawberries are able to grow early, mid, and late summer plants. Meanwhile, perpetual strawberries are everbearing berries for all seasons.

For beginners and home garden, it is recommended that we grow the perpetual strawberry seeds. It can last for five years. Also, it can create abundant harvest throughout the year.

As we decide to pick certain types of seeds, we can directly buy the seeds right away. It is important to buy the seeds with good resistance against weather and diseases. The disease-resistant seeds are usually more expensive.

  • Get Prepared with Soils

Before planting the strawberry seeds, we need to make a plan. It is good to grow the seeds in the spring or autumn. Besides, we have to prepare sunny and sheltered areas.

The Fertile and settled soil is recommended. We have to improve the soil initially with organic compost or well-rotted manure.

  • Set the Space

Planting the strawberries need a lot of spaces. We have to give sufficient space for better cropping. We need an easy access fo watering.

When planting the seeds in the ground, we can give 45 cm apart for each seed. Meanwhile, the row space should be at least 75 cm. Using a trowel, we must dig a hole that can accommodate the roots of the strawberry seeds.

The crucial thing is that the pot-grown plants must be on the top of the soil surface. We need to set a large hole for the roots. Yet, we should not plant the seeds too deeply.

Also, growing the crown too high over the soil surface is not healthy as well. The seeds can dry out and end up dying before growing any leaves or flowers.

How to Plant Strawberry Seeds in Planters

Strawberries will grow well in hanging baskets. We can also plant them in the patio planters or containers. Limited spaces will not be matter as we have a healthy soil for it.

The planters are good for protection. The containers will keep the seeds away from slugs, animals, and other problems. It will give so much lively look for our patio and veranda. When the fruit harvesting comes, our porch can look fresh and gorgeous.

During the dry periods, we have to water the seeds frequently. If we grow the seeds in hanging baskets, we can feed the seeds every two weeks.

Fertilisers are important for the growing season. After the flower grows, we have to use high-potash liquid fertilizer for improving excellent quality fruiting.

How to maintain strawberry seeds that have been planted

Maintaining strawberry seeds requires proper care and attention to ensure their healthy growth. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to maintain strawberry seeds that have been planted:

  • Watering: Start by watering the strawberry seeds gently after planting. Keep the soil moist but not overly saturated. Water them regularly to ensure consistent moisture levels, especially during dry periods.
  • Sunlight: Place the planted seeds in a location where they can receive ample sunlight. Strawberries thrive in full sun, so choose a spot that gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the strawberry plants. This helps conserve moisture, suppress weed growth, and maintain a more consistent soil temperature. Use straw, wood chips, or leaves as mulch, and spread it evenly around the plant, leaving some space around the crown.
  • Fertilization: Strawberries require proper nutrition for healthy growth. Begin fertilizing the plants when they start producing leaves. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for fruits or vegetables. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package to determine the appropriate amount and frequency of application.
  • Weed control: Regularly remove any weeds that grow near the strawberry plants. Weeds compete for nutrients and moisture, so it's important to keep the area around the plants weed-free. Be careful not to disturb the shallow roots of the strawberries while weeding.
  • Pests and diseases: Keep an eye out for common pests such as slugs, snails, aphids and mites. Inspect the plants regularly and take appropriate measures to control any infestations. Additionally, be aware of common strawberry diseases like powdery mildew and gray mold. If any signs of disease appear, promptly treat the plants with appropriate fungicides or seek advice from a local gardening expert.
  • Pruning: Regularly inspect the plants for dead or damaged leaves and remove them to maintain good airflow and prevent the spread of diseases. After the fruiting season, prune the plants by cutting back any runners or excess foliage.
  • Harvesting: Once the strawberry plants produce ripe fruit, harvest them carefully to avoid damaging the plants. Pick the strawberries when they are fully red and ripe, usually within 4-6 weeks from the time the flowers appear. Gently twist or cut the stem above the strawberry to harvest it.
